BROWNSTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

For years, friends and family of Lizzie Mae Collier-Sweet always suspected the worst.

But there had been no closure, until today.

"We notified the family, and they were both relieved and sorrowful that they lost their family member," said Brownstown Police Deputy Chief Robert Matthews. "They were relieved that they finally found out what happened to her."

Brownstown Twp. Police said they located the remains of the 49 year-old in a swampy, wooded area near the Blakely Clark Marsh Creek, behind Allen Road.

That area was search by officers, cadaver dogs and helicopters several times before during the last six years.

"Why we were unable to find these remains before is hard to say," Dep. Chief Matthews said. "The waters rise and recede, so (the remains) may have been covered by water those certain times we went through there."

The medical examiners office confirms a skull, discovered last month by a man searching for antlers in that wooded area, does in fact belong to Lizzie Mae Collier-Sweet.

Recent mild weather made it possible to search that same area again, and this time police discovered more skeletal remains scattered approximately 100 yards away.

Dep. Chief Matthews said evidence found nearby suggests the remains belong to Lizzie Mae.

"We're treating it as a suspicious death at this time," Matthews said. "We won't know anything until the scene is fully processed."

Lizzie Mae was last seen back in Jan. 2007. Her husband Roger Sweet told police she likely set the fire to their home and went into the woods to kill herself.

Family and friends have always doubted that, and long suspected her husband, who Lizzie Mae was divorcing at the time.

Since then, Roger Sweet has been convicted for murdering his first wife Marlene Sweet. He's also serving time for child pornography, and having a sexual relationship with a 16 year-old mentally disabled girl.

In a diary found inside their charred home, Lizzie Mae wrote about her suspicions about her husband and the physical abuse she endured.

But to this day, Roger Sweet claims he knows nothing about her death.

Police long suspected Lizzie's husband, Roger Sweet, in his wife's disappearance, but he never cooperated with the investigation.
