CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

The beer industry, from brewers to importers, distributors and retailers, contributes more than $10 billion to Illinois' economy annually, according to a new economic impact study commissioned by a brewing industry trade association and the National Beer Wholesalers Association.

Jointly commissioned by the National Beer Wholesalers Association (NBWA) and the Beer Institute, the study shows that the industry generates nearly 86,400 jobs in Illinois -- accounting for $3.5 billion in wages and benefits. The industry also contributed $1.5 billion in the form of business, personal and consumption taxes in 2012, a release last week said.

According to the study, part of this economic impact comes from the state's 75 brewers. employing 1,330 people.

Surprisingly, perhaps, the beer industry has a greater economic impact in the state of Illinois than to our neighbors to the north. According to the study, the beer industry contributes just over $8.6 billion to the state economy of Wisconsin, where 60,630 jobs are tied to the industry, the report said.

The Beer Serves America Economic Impact study was conducted by New York-based John Dunham & Associates and covers data compiled in 2010.
