Search underway for man police say threatened to shoot his ex

CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

A widespread, intense manhunt has been launched for 23-year-old Jonathan Elbers of Reese in Michigan's Thumb.

Chesterfield Township Police say they were called to a home on Nicolette near Oakwood at 1:00 a.m. Friday morning.

They say Elbers' 20-year-old girlfriend informed him she was breaking up with him.  Elbers, police say, drove from the Thumb.  He got into her home, tied her up and was actually stuffing her into a large bag designed to cover an artificial Christmas tree.

Police say that Elbers told his ex-girlfriend he was going to put her in the back of his truck and shoot her in the head, and when police arrived, the ex-girlfriend struck Elbers with a glass statue seriously cutting his head.

Police described a wrestling scene with Elbers.  Bleeding badly, he somehow escaped and ran away.

The home is near 23 Mile Road and I-94.

As police towed Elbers' pickup from the street, a rifle and duct tape was found inside the truck.

The ex-girlfriend was home with her sister when Elbers arrived.

"The other daughter let the police into the house," said neighbor Cyndi Gagled.

Multiple agencies have pitched in to find Elbers, including a K-9 and a aerial search.  At 2:30 p.m. Friday afternoon, police say Elbers was spotted and nearly arrested.

"We had a cell phone caller tip us off about 2:30 that he was walking on the side of New Haven Road.  State Police trooper was close by.  He pulled up, saw him.  When he went to confront him, the individual fled across New Haven Road and into the thick woods," said Sergeant Bradley A. Kersten with Chesterfield Police.

Police are continuing to search for Elbers.  They say it is important to find him and feel he is dangerous.
