FBI: ‘Mummy Bandit’ strikes for fifth time

CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man dubbed the "Mummy Bandit" by the FBI because of the way he wraps his face is suspected of robbing a bank on the North Side on Sunday, his fifth since late December.

The robbery happened at a TCF Bank branch inside a Jewel-Osco store in the 4200 block of North Lincoln Avenue at 10:10 a.m. Sunday, police News Affairs Officer Jose Estrada said.

It was the first time he has robbed a bank that was not a North Community Bank branch, according to the FBI.

In the latest robbery, the suspect was described as a white man in his 30s with medical tape or gauze around his face and carrying a cane, police said.

No one was injured in the robbery and the robber did not display or imply he had a weapon, Estrada said. He fled on foot with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Previously, the "Mummy Bandit" robbed North Community branches at 2000 W. Division St. on March 5; the branch 4701 N. Clark St. on Dec. 20 and Feb. 1; and the branch at 1555 N. Damen on Feb. 22.

Anyone with information should call the FBI at (312) 421-6700.
