ATLANTA -

Atlanta police officers say a passenger was found at the bottom of the escalator after they believe he jumped from the top level of the concourse on Saturday.

Michael Richter does a lot of flying, but he wasn't prepared for the tragic scene on Saturday night in Concourse E at Hartsfield-Jackson.

"Going down the normal escalators, they had it roped off with yellow tape," said Richter.

Police say the victim was unresponsive and taken to Grady Hospital where he died.

The name of the passenger was identified as Kenneth Thornwell, 54, of Cary, North Carolina.

Authorities said that information gathered at the scene indicated that Thornwell committed suicide.
