Possible top candidate named for next DPD Chief

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

The search continues for the next Detroit Police Chief, a job many have tried and some have failed. The Board of Police Commissioners brought in a firm to conduct a nationwide search after Chief Ralph Godbee resigned. The firm reached out to nearly 50 Chiefs of Police across the nation, asking for any good recommendations for the position.

One candidate in particular seems to top the list, Cincinnati Police Chief James Craig.

Craig's originally from Detroit. He graduated from Cass Tech, and started his career in the Detroit Police Department in 1977. He continued on to Los Angeles after being laid off, and there he soared through the ranks of the LAPD. He went on to become the chief of Portland, Maine, then Cincinnati, a city that is also no stranger to violence.

Rev. Jerome Warfield, chairman of the Board of Police Commissioners, points out, "We're looking for someone who has the experience of dealing with a community such as Detroit. Someone that's dealing with gang issues, or that's dealing with a great deal of violence."

Sources say Craig was in Detroit last week, meeting with city officials including Mayor Dave Bing and Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr.

The firm will soon narrow down the pool to five candidates. That list will be given to Mayor Bing, who will submit a name to City Council. Orr, however, has the final say.

When asked when the city could expect a new chief, Warfield responded, "Without question, this year. Detroit will have a new Chief of Police this year."
