DETROIT (WJBK) -

"Low Winter Sun" is a cops and corruption drama debuting in August on AMC.

Media writer Corey Hall said it appears the creators have the chops to get it right.  Shot in Detroit, the gritty series has a ten episode order, AMC's pedigree and film incentives on its side.

"It's not like it was three years ago when we were really turning over projects.  But hopefully this will be a sign of things to come because I think people came here when we were giving away all the money, but Detroit is still an attractive location if you want to have a certain kind of story, if you want to have grit, if you want to have edge, you want to have some style that you can't find other places," Hall said.

Hall hopes the show goes beyond the window dressing settings of previous shot in Detroit shows.

"'Hung' was shot here, and outside of the opening credits, you wouldn't know that it took place in Detroit.  So hopefully this show really gets a little flavor of the city, gets the experience," he said.

"Where did 'Detroit 1-8-7' go wrong where this show can go right?" I asked.

"First of all, there's not even a 1-8-7 code in the Detroit Police Department, so that's like a California thing, and I think people found some of the touches like that were a little off, a little weird.  So hopefully they'll get the details right on this one.  '1-8-7' got better as it went along... but it got cut short," he explained.

"Low Winter Sun" gets the benefit of "Breaking Bad" as a lead in, so it certainly won't be wanting for an audience when it debuts.  Whether the show delivers over the long haul is any Detroiter's guess.
