ATLANTA -

Atlanta city employees cleaned up Mims Park and did landscaping work in honor of Earth Day.

Volunteers competed with city employees on Tuesday for an Earth Day Cleanup Challenge. They made improvements and picked up litter in neighborhoods across Atlanta as well as planted trees.

Mayor Kasim Reed talked about a new initiative between the city and private businesses to make a positive impact on the environment.

Reed said the city has increased recycling efforts and it's working with organizations to continually clean up streams and parks.

A tire round-up is scheduled for Saturday in Atlanta.
