Health Watch: diabetes doubles in NYC

The number of New Yorkers suffering from diabetes has jumped.

The NYC Health Department says in 2011 nearly 650K New Yorkers had a diagnosis of diabetes; that's an increase of over 200K compared to 2002 statistics.

Over 230K New Yorkers have diabetes and are not aware of it.

Your body does not control blood sugar properly because either you do not have enough insulin or your body is resistant to the effects of insulin.

Diabetes is considered a "silent killer" because it does increase your risk of premature death, blindness, amputation and more conditions.

Diabetes is linked to being overweight.

    Officials are investigating eight confirmed cases of mumps found in students at New Jersey's Stevens Institute of Technology.The college in Hoboken says the students range in age from 18 to 21. All were fully vaccinated with two documented doses of mumps-containing vaccine.
