Bicyclist killed after being struck by Melbourne police officer

MELBOURNE, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A Melbourne police officer has been placed on administrative leave after hitting and killing a man on a bicycle.

Shortly before 10 p.m. Wednesday, Officer Steven Linthicum, 33, was traveling eastbound on State Road 518 on the way to a call.  Officer Linthicum said that, as he was driving in the right lane, 53-year-old Richard Hill turned in front of his cruiser.  

Hill was thrown from his bike in that crash.  He was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne where he was pronounced dead.

This crash remains under investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol.
