FDLE investigates after two deputies shoot man to death

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating a deadly shooting two Orange County Sheriff's deputies.    The incident happened Monday evening along Orange Blossom Trail just south of Holden Ave.  and resulted in the closure of the northbound lanes of OBT for a few hours as the investigation got under way.

A few people had called 911 to report that there is a man with a gun near the Tranquility Hotel. Deputies arrived and saw a man with a gun walking near the hotel.  They tried to stop him, but he would not follow their commands. The Sheriff's Office said the deputies felt threatened, and both shot at him.   The man, identified as 34-year-old Alexis C. Diaz, later died.

"As we continue the investigation, FDLE first has to interview the involved deputies," said Orange County Sheriff's Capt. Angel Nieves.  "They will talk to the witnesses that were present, they will recover any video, any other evidence that is on the scene, to piece the information together."

The Sheriff's Office said it appears that the gun Diaz was holding was actually a pellet gun.  It was recovered at the scene of the shooting.

The Sheriff's Office has identified the deputies involved in the shooting as Ronald Allen and Brian Tracy.  Deputy Allen has been employed with the Orange County Sheriff's Office since 2008 and Deputy Tracy joined the force in November of last year.

Both men have been reassigned to administrative duties for no less than a week, pending an administrative investigation.  The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is the lead agency in this investigation.
