Man arrested for possessing partially built bomb

A man, whom police said had a partially built pipe bomb in his truck, will be released from sometime this afternoon.

According to authorities, Joseph Long, 30, was parked in his pickup truck at a closed ballpark in Indian Harbor Beach around 2:30 Tuesday morning.  A resident called police to report him as a suspicious looking person.
"They located that person and during that investigation a pipe bomb along with several materials were found inside that truck," said Satellite Beach Police Chief Jeff Pearson.  But that wasn't all the police say they found.  There was also an AR-15 rifle,  a .40 caliber handgun, a compound bow, multiple knives, and several flashlights.

However, it was primarily what officers saw sitting on the center console of the truck that caused them considerable concern.  It was a partially built pipe bomb, along with bomb making materials such as dismantled shot-gun shells, fuses, pipes and tape.

The Brevard County Sheriff's bomb squad was called in, along with agents from the
Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  They obtained a search warrant for the 30-year-old's Satellite Beach home where he lives with his parents.  There, they found more bomb making materials in his room, and on the garage work bench.

"It's clear that the suspect was experimenting with small scale devices, but they had potential to cause very serious injury if you are in close proximity," said Chief Pearson.

What is unclear to investigators is what the alleged bomb-building suspect was planning. Police said they found the remnants of an exploded pipe bomb in his truck, which investigators said Long claims he found.  There was also a notebook with his writing at his house, but investigators said it did not offer any clues.

Long is scheduled to be let out of jail after posting his $5,500 bond.
