Renovation project to shut down Red Line for 5 months

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On May 19, a major renovation project gets underway along the Red Line. The south end of the tracks from 22nd St. in Chinatown to 95th St. and the Dan Ryan will be shut down for five months.

Red Line riders say they're not happy about the project or how long it's going to take, but they'll deal with it because what they're going to get is better than what they're getting now. The current Red Line train is making some riders late for work and school.

"Oh, it's slow," one rider moaned. "It's tortured. You can tell they need to do some work."

"You feel the bumps on the ride sometimes," says another. "It's slow. They stop. If you have to be at work at a certain time and they stop for whatever reason while they're working on the tracks the train is slow."

CTA says that's all getting ready to change in a couple of weeks when they start a major renovation project from at 95th and the Dan Ryan to Cermack and Chinatown.

CTA President Forrest Claypool was on 95th street asking and answering questions for riders. The ties, rails and drainage system will be new and eight stations will be fitted with new paint, better lighting and benches and bike racks.

Claypool says he just wants to make sure each riders knows when the project starts.

"There's always somebody who's going to be surprised come May 19 and we don't want them to be so this outreach is to let people know this is coming," says Claypool. "What it's all about. It's a faster smoother commute for them. 20 minutes off their commute once we're done but it's five months of inconvenience. And during that time, we alternative service routes we want you to know about."

Claypool says the best alternative route has Red Line riders getting on free shuttle buses. At the Cermack-Wentworth station, those buses will be on the west side of 95th street and they'll take them to the Green Line. The connection there at Garfield is free.
