McCarthy, Bryd-Bennett make CPS walk from Betsy Ross to Dulles

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

They talked the talk. Now the head of CPS and Chicago police are trying to walk the walk when it comes to new school routes. Is this really a safe passage?

One of the big worries Chicago parents have with the Chicago Public School closures is how their kids will get to their welcoming schools. Crossing gang territories can be deadly.

Students from Betsy Ross Elementary will be making the walk to Dulles Elementary if the CPS school closure plan takes full effect.

"This is the safest school in this neighborhood and for them to take this school from these neighborhood children is just flat out wrong," says Betsy Ross parent LaToya Jasper.

Jasper doesn't plan on sending her kids to the recommended schools if Betsy Ross closes.

"The schools that they're trying to send them to are in areas where people get shot up and killed on a regular basis," Jasper says.

Chicago Police Supt. Garry McCarthy, CPS Chief Barbara Byrd-Bennett and other municipal leaders made the walk to get a first-hand look at parents' concerns and tried prove that the new route – and other like it - will be safe.

"There were a couple of streets where I thought, if my grandchildren were crossing there, do I want a safe passage worker there in particular?" Byrd-Bennett said. "So that it helps us get a real authentic feel for where and what actions we will request."

They started on 61st and Wabash and went to 63rd and Calumet. The path is being recommended as a "Safe Passage" for students and their parents that are concerned for their safety.

"We're going to ensure that we do everything that we possibly can to ensure that the children are safe," says CPD Superintendent Gary McCarthy. "Whether it's crossing streets or whether it's dealing with gang bangers."

Parents at Dulles Elementary are also concerned about the possible influx of students.

"It's gonna be very difficult to adjust ourselves and those kids with each other because we're gonna need a lot of security," says Dulles parent Sonita Lewis. "We're gonna need a lot of help from a lot of parents."

The new route from Betsy Ross to Dulles is not final just yet. CPS and CPD are looking at all of the options for students if and when their schools close.
