A Very Rare Catch Off Newport Beach

Newport Beach, CA -

On Wednesday, May 1st fisherman out with Davey's Locker Sportfishing in Newport Beach, A 125 pound Opah was caught by Captain Jeff Patrick. The catch came after a 30 minute battle only about 1000 yards from the shore. The fish was caught in about 100 feet of water eating a live sardine for bait.

The Opah is a very unusual fish that is bright orange and usually caught in much deeper water miles offshore and is very rare catch even then.

This catch was in 200 feet of water maybe 1000 yards from the coast of Newport Beach. In the over 50 years we have never caught a Opah on a half day fishing trip. Quite a catch.

HERE is a YouTube link to the video of the Opah catch.
