MELBOURNE BEACH, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

A 16-year-old boy is recovering after being bitten twice by a shark in Melbourne Beach over the weekend.

Brevard County Fire Rescue said the shark attacked and bit Michael Adler's ankle while he was in the water Saturday before noon near the 9300 block of A1A.

When fire rescue arrived on the scene, the teen was already out of the water, but the bite was so severe, he was transported to Holmes Regional Medical Center.

"I paddled into shore as fast as I could, because I thought it was going to come back and chase the blood," Michael said.

"Some guy who was ex-military helped me and used my surf leash as a tourniquet and then wrapped a towel around my foot, which helped a lot," he said.

Michael received 20 stitches, but his injuries are not life-threatening.
