TROY, Mich. (WJBK) -

Brilliant orange flames lit up the sky for hours after a disabled semi truck caught fire on I-75 northbound near Maple Road early Friday morning.

"Apparently the cab caught on fire and worked its way back to the load and it just went up in flames," said Al Robinson with the Road Commission for Oakland County.

Robinson says the trailer was packed with toilet paper and other paper products, fueling a fire that forced fire crews to shut down the busy stretch of highway for nearly seven hours.

The driver was able to escape the truck without injury.

Robinson says the stretch of road suffered no structural damage but says crews will keep an eye on the area through the remainder of the day.
