Alhambra, CA -

(FOX 11/CNS) A man who authorities say was brandishing a knife was shot to death by police today in the lobby of the Alhambra police station.

The shooting was reported about 7:30 a.m. in the 200 block of South First Street, sheriff's Deputy Guillermina Saldana said. No officers were hurt.

Authorities withheld the name of the man, who died at the scene, pending notification of kin.

According to the preliminary investigation, the man entered the lobby of the police station and stood there for a few minutes, sheriff's Lt. Dave Coleman said.

Officers tried to speak with him, but he was "non-responsive," Coleman said.

"(Officers) tried to speak with the individual, who was clutching a large black backpack," Coleman said. "Again he was non-responsive -- appeared to be incoherent -- wouldn't respond to the questions of the officers. They obviously were concerned that he was either mentally impaired or under the influence of possibly a narcotic.

"They asked for additional officers to respond, and approximately five officers were in the lobby of the station when the suspect produced a large carving or kitchen knife, and an officer-involved shooting occurred," Coleman said.

Three officers opened fire, Coleman said.

Sheriff's detectives assisted Alhambra police in the investigation.
