Cold-Case Murder Solved 6 Years After Man's Disappearance

MAYS LANDING, N.J. -

A New Jersey woman is behind bars after police say they found her husband's remains in her closet. He's been missing for years.

This is a gruesome story. FOX 29's Shawnette Wilson talked to stunned neighbors who say they never saw this coming.

"He's not the type of person to just leave everything behind and go," said Robert Valiante, a friend of the victim.

Friends gathered outside a Mays Landing home where 66-year-old Daniel Borrows was last seen alive. That was in 2007, when he lived here with his then wife.

"I was one of his best friends, and I'm sure he would have said something to me, 'Look, I'm leaving. I'll be back in touch with you.' And he just disappeared, and I know that wasn't him," Valiante said.

On Friday, family and friends got the news they feared. Police arrested his now ex-wife, Loretta, after they found his remains in a closet in the bottom floor of a duplex she was renting in Ventnor.

"You never expect it. This lady's a very nice lady," one neighbor said.

Most of the suspects' neighbors are shocked to hear what the 61-year-old woman is accused of. According to investigators, she kept Daniel's remains in two separate containers they say she had been moving around every time she relocated.

"That's really disgusting. And creepy. Wow!" another neighbor said.

Loretta had reported her husband missing in 2007, claiming he simply up and left. Eventually, the case was closed, but the victim's family never bought her story and the case wound up being reopened.

Valiante and his son grew up with the victim and knew the suspect.

"I was really shocked she had him in her possession. I figured she got rid of him awhile ago," he said.

"I drive by here every day going to my father's. I'd look at the house and say, 'Where you at, Danny?' And now we can put it to rest, because we know where he's at, we know what happened now," said Valiante's son.

Loretta is charged with murder. Investigators believe she stabbed her husband to death. They're waiting on autopsy results, Wilson reported.
