There are new laws in effect for boaters. There will be additional penalties if a boat does not stop for sheriff's deputies out on the water. It's now mandatory than anyone born after July 1, 1996 has to take a boater safety course to operate a boat in Michigan.

"We want to get people involved and we want people to take a boater safety course," Wickersham told Fox 2. "Anybody who operates a vessel on the water, we want them to understand the rules on the water, understand what they need to do to be safe when they're out there, and if they get in trouble what they need to do."

The first thing people need to do is check their boat and make sure everything is operational. Also, remember that boating and drinking don't mix. Right now, there is legislation pending to lower the blood alcohol content on the water to .08 - to mirror the rules of the road.
