Teen paralyzed in wrestling tournament given wheelchair-accessible van

NEWTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A Newton County teenager and his mom received the gift of mobility on Thursday, thanks to some Good Samaritans.  Tyler Head was injured in a high school wrestling tournament in December, and getting back and forth to therapy is a vital to his recovery.

Good Day Atlanta's Ron Gant introduced us to the 16-year-old quadriplegic in February.  Tyler suffered a spinal cord injury after he slipped during a match.  He can no longer use his legs and has to take daily trips to rehab at Shepherd Center in Atlanta.

Chris West from R&R Mobility heard about Tyler, and he decided to help get donations to build a wheelchair-accessible van for Tyler and his family.  West presented it to Tyler on Thursday, and FOX 5 was there to see it happen.

Tyler and his family say they grateful for both the van and for the freedom that it brings.

"It's tough to get around," Tyler said.  "You've got to find the curb cuts and handicapped doors, and that's where this van is going to be so pivotal."

Tyler says he's making good progress and hopes to get the use of his legs back someday.
