Main Beach tops annual survey of best beaches

EAST HAMPTON, N.Y. (AP) - A New York beach tops the annual survey of the best beaches in the country.

Main Beach in East Hampton was named No. 1 in the 23rd edition of the country's Top 10 best beaches. The list comes from Stephen P. Leatherman, a coastal expert at Florida International University in Miami who goes by the nickname Dr. Beach.

He says Main Beach does not appear to have suffered much damage from Superstorm Sandy. He says the beach is very well maintained and is among the cleanest beaches he has ever seen.

The Top 10, after Main Beach this year, are: Kahanamoku Beach, Waikiki, Hawaii; St. George Island State Park, Fla.; Hamoa Beach, Maui, Hawaii; Waimanalo Bay State Park, Oahu, Hawaii; Barefoot Beach Preserve County Park, Bonita Springs, Fla.; Cape Florida State Park, Key Biscayne, Fla.

Also, Cape Hatteras, Outer Banks, N.C.; Coast Guard Beach, Cape Cod, Mass.; and Beachwalker Park, Kiawah Island, S.C.

Federal authorities say seven Long Island restaurants have agreed to pay nearly $1.7 million in back wages to 363 waiters and kitchen workers. The U.S. Labor Department says the restaurants - six in Suffolk and one in Nassau - were accused of paying workers below the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour. They also were accused of paying employees off the books, failing to pay time and a half for overtime and other violations.
