Christie Talks Jersey Shore Storm Recovery With FOX 29

Posted: Updated:
POINT PLEASANT, N.J. -

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is raving about the Garden State. FOX 29's Iain Page had the chance to sit down with him Friday in Point Pleasant.

Christie wants to let everyone know that, seven months after Superstorm Sandy, the Jersey Shore is back and better than ever.

The boardwalks are back, and so are the beaches.

The recovery has been remarkable.

Page asked the governor what Philadelphians can expect to see down the shore this summer.

"Listen, especially for your viewers in Philadelphia, most of those are Long Beach Island to south folks, right? For those folks, they're not gonna see any difference at all. They're really not," Christie said.

"You go to Wildwood, Ocean City, Avalon, Sea Isle City, you go to those places, and that's where most of the folks in Philadelphia head to they're not gonna see any difference at all. It's going to be very normal for them down there. The folks that come from New York, North Jersey and there northern parts of the shore, they're still gonna see some difference from the destruction. But, where your folks in Philly go, it's gonna be a good summer."

"The governor added, "We invite people to come down, enjoy the beaches, enjoy the water, the water is clean, the beaches are clean, the boardwalk and the businesses are ready to serve you."

"Families are welcome. Come here, let your hair down, have a good time. There's so few places left in the world that you can do that, and this is one of them, and that's what I think makes it so special," he said.

"This summer in particular, you'll be doing something really good for people who've gone through a difficult time if you decide to spend your summer at the Jersey Shore

Despite the chilly rain, Christie mingled with the crowd, posed for pictures and took a stroll on the boardwalk.

Page also asked the governor Friday about the attitude that Jersey's response to Sandy has been stronger than the storm.

"Anybody who's from New Jersey or spent any significant time here knows that we have a bit of an edge," Christie answered. "And some of that's a little chip on our shoulder 'cause, you know, as Benjamin Franklin used to say, we're a keg tapped at both ends, one from New York one from Philly. So, we always feel a little stuck in between New York and Philadelphia, and we don't necessarily get our due. That gives us a little chip on the shoulder and a little edge. That edge has helped us in response to the storm because people are tough, they're used to felling a little bit like the underdog and they're used to fighting. And that's what our folks have done, and it's been really great for our state."

He added, "We're replenishing all the beaches in a way that we haven't had the money to do before because of the federal aid that we got. So we're replenishing the beaches and making them broader, as a protective device, and then building the dune systems that will help to protect the homes inland from any future storms."

Christie will lead President Barack Obama on a tour Tuesday, to show the recovery efforts in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

He also plans to meet with residents who have benefited from federal aid.

This will be the president's second trip since Sandy hit.
