Californians Back Brown’s Budget Plans

A new poll released this week by the Public Policy Institute of California finds most Californians favor Brown's budget, which pays down debt, includes increases in education spending and puts money away for a rainy day.

According to the poll, two-thirds of likely voters want to focus on debt reduction in favor of spending.

In a recent interview, Lieutenant Governor Gavin Newsom told our investigative producer Heidi Cuda that state lawmakers are getting the message.

"For such a deep blue state, it's rather remarkable what happened in the last couple of years," he said. "It wasn't just the Governor, it was very progressive Democratic leaders in the legislature that made cuts that Republican leaders in very conservative states probably couldn't have done, as it relates to welfare and health care for indigents and seniors and the like. People are recognizing that you don't need to be profligate to be progressive, that we can maintain fiscal discipline."

Lawmakers face a June 15 deadline to pass a spending plan.
