There was a highway crash Tuesday near French Road in Detroit. State police were called to the scene, but when they got there, the were no victims. All they found was blood and shell casings scattered along I-94.

The unusual police scene caused I-94 westbound to be shut down between Conner and French Road for hours.

A blue SUV slammed into the back of a semi truck, then crashed into an MDOT traffic sign, but when police arrived, the SUV was empty.

"Troopers found numerous shell casings out there on the scene. They also found some blood in the vehicle, so they knew that something had occurred," said Lieutenant Michael Shaw with Michigan State Police.

The semi driver told police he didn't see anything. Detroit police reported shots fired in the area. Officers searched the car and combed the area marking shell casings and looking for a victim. It turned out they didn't have to wait long.

"About an hour after they were out there, they were contacted by DPD that an individual had turned himself over to St. John's Hospital and had a bullet wound to his leg," Shaw explained.

The 17-year-old was interrogated by police as they questioned the line of events. What came first, the crash or the shooting, and why did the altercation become violent?

"The story has changed quite a bit... from anywhere between three or four cars being involved," Shaw said.

Police are also investigating a possible gang connection and say everyday metro Detroit residents should not be concerned.
