Survey: New York, Americans the best for tipping

Posted: Updated:

What's your tipping policy? A new survey shows that New Yorkers are the most generous tippers in the U.S. This is followed by diners from New Jersey, California, Nevada and Texas.

This is according to a new survey from www.CouponCodes4u.com, an online discount company that asked 2,317 Americans about their personal spending habits.

With more praise for the U.S., a recent survey from TripAdvisor shows that most Americans say they tip while on vacation and more than 50 percent say they always make a point to leave gratuity – even if they aren't familiar with the tipping policy in a different country.

"Tipping is a cultural norm in the States and U.S. travelers have a tendency to take their customs on the road whether they are on American soil or traveling abroad," Brooke Ferencsik, director of communications at TripAdvisor.

The survey totals responses from more than 9,000 people on vacation. Of them, nearly all of the Americans said they tipped while traveling abroad. If they didn't know the local policy, most Americans said they would:

73% reference travel guides
48% read online reviews
46% check online forums
35% ask friends or family who have visited the country
26% get the lowdown from the locals
