CHESTERFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WJBK) -

There was a solemn ceremony on Friday for a reserve police officer hit and killed as he rode his motorcycle.

A procession paused at 21 Mile and Jefferson, the very place where Officer Patrick Wisniewski was killed on Sunday. There were a lot of tears as his wife and children placed flowers at the site beneath a wreath and his picture.

Wisniewski was a reserve officer for New Baltimore, but he was a hero wearing a different hat as an airman at Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

"My husband would leave for the day, and he would go do his military duties, and then he would come home and within an hour change uniforms, put on the New Baltimore uniform, and leave again to serve the community," said Jennifer Wisniewski.

It was that humility and sense of duty that carried him from reserve officer to more. He wanted to serve. He was about to be hired as a full-time officer in New Baltimore.

"My kids would actually line up at the front door, and they're going, 'Daddy, you're going out to protect us from the bad guys,' and they'd hug and kiss him," Wisniewski said. "It was high fives all the way out the door with them lined up, and they knew that they were safe."

"You have someone out, suspended license, operating while intoxicated. It's a tragedy, and it is a severe loss, not only to this community and nation, but to these children, these young kids that he has," said New Baltimore Police Chief Tim Wiley.

The driver accused of hitting Wisnewski is facing charges.

The hardest thing now is what Jennifer Wisnewski has had to teach her children, a lesson in loss as she herself tries to cope.

"They know that daddy is up in heaven. They ask every once in a while if daddy's going to come back down, and I just get them through every day by telling them, 'Close your eyes, baby, and you'll see him. You can talk to him,'" she said.

The long procession started in New Baltimore, stretched through Chesterfield Township and ended at the chapel at Selfridge Air National Guard Base where the pain of loss was felt, but equally pride, as well. Family, friends, airmen and police officers all gave a final salute to a humble hero.

A memorial mass for Wisnewski is planned for Saturday, and his burial will take place on Monday.
