A Volusia County man is under arrest for a deadly hit and run accident in New Smyrna Beach, that killed a 33-year-old waitress Wednesday morning.
"We've lost a great companion in life I mean a truly great companion and friend, not just a waitress, we lost a friend," said Dale Cormican.
Longtime customers of Touch of Italy restaurant in New Smyrna Beach are mourning the loss of their favorite waitress, Desiree Williams, 33, killed in a hit and run accident early this morning.
"I just dropped off some plants at her house yesterday, and I am truly stunned, truly from this whole situation, as everybody is in this whole restaurant," Cormican said.
Florida Highway Patrol troopers say Williams was walking on South Atlantic Avenue near Bottle Island road in an unknown direction around 2:50 a.m. Wednesday, when troopers say Jason Wilke, 31, was driving southbound and hit Williams, then fled the scene.
"It's unfortunate what happened to Desiree," said Patrick Eichstaedt, another longtime customer.
Volusia County deputies were able to find Wilke who was arrested and charged with DUI Manslaughter among other offenses. Arrest records show Wilke has been arrested 18 other times since 2003, including another DUI charge from 2012.
Friends and co-workers back at the restaurant where Williams worked are remembering the good times.
"She had a charisma I must say, it just got to you, it made you smile, when she smiled you smiled," Cormican said.
Troopers say Wilke was driving on a revoked license; his first appearance is set for Thursday afternoon.
