CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

While the mother accused of killing her son who had autism awaits her next court hearing, other families of children with autism are reacting to the news.

One Chicago family understands the challenges of raising special needs children. 13-year-old Noah Martin has autism. His mother, Margaret says the teen is also nonverbal, although he loves to say hi to the camera in his own way.

"He wants to go out more," Margaret says. "This is his time, the nice weather. He wants to go out, he wants to do things."

Both of Margaret's children, Noah and 11-year-old Hannah have autism. Hannah communicates more than Noah and has an affection for a certain TV station: FOX 32 News.

Life with two children who have autism is a challenge for Margaret and her husband.

"It's not normal the way we live. Oh, I'm going to cry. Every day is just a challenge from the time we wake up to the time we go to sleep. Just getting them ready, brushing their teeth, getting them dressed," Margaret says.

Margaret couldn't help, but feel for 14-year-old Alex Spourdalakis' family after hearing he was killed, allegedly by his own mother.

"It's unfortunate, but you hear of a lot of stories where parents think that they're doing good and for the better of the child," she says. "And you know, they're just backed into that place where they feel they don't have anywhere else to turn."

The Martin family has had dark times before.

"It's sad to say, but one of our hopes is and it's unrealistic, is that we would out live our children," Margaret says. "As to not have them be without us. And as unrealistic as that is, it's something that is a bad thought. You say that to someone and they look at you like you're crazy."

For now, the family lives in the moment and simply takes life one day at a time.
