Central Command official sentenced to 10 years in federal prison
ORLANDO, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -
A former U.S. Central Command official has been sentenced to 10 years in federal prison for attempting to entice a minor for sex.
A federal judge in Orlando on Thursday also sentenced 50-year-old Stephen Governale to 10 years of supervision and ordered that he register as a sex offender after his release from prison.
Governale was arrested last September and pleaded guilty earlier this year.
The parents of the 17-year-old teen alerted FBI officials in Florida to Facebook chats their son had been having with Governale and provided the agency with some of those messages, according to court records.
The teen told investigators he had traveled with Governale on two occasions and engaged in sexual acts with him.
Governale met the boy in October 2009 through an organization affiliated with the military. The boy told authorities he was invited to attend a conference in Brevard County in September 2010 and slept in the same bed with the officer. The boy said Governale rented a pornographic movie which they watched together, records indicate.
At the time of his arrest, Governale was a protocol officer at Central Command in Tampa and married.
