Joe Torre's daughter catches falling baby in Brooklyn

Posted: Updated:

Joe Torre's daughter caught a 1-year-old boy who fell from a fire escape outside a second-floor apartment in the Bay Ridge section of Brooklyn Wednesday morning.

Police and witnesses said the baby had climbed out onto the fire escape and then fell from the awning of a yogurt shop. The boy is listed in stable condition.

Torre, a former manager of the New York Yankees, said he had no idea that his daughter, Cristina, 44, had saved the baby when he started getting calls congratulating him on being the father of a hero.

"She was riding her bike and somebody was talking about a child being on a fire escape and she got off and went over there and sure enough there was a baby and she caught the baby," Torre told Fox 5's Duke Castiglione. "She is a school teacher. She wanted to make sure I let everybody know she is a school teacher because she feels like teachers don't get enough attention."

Police arrested the baby's parents, Sam Miller, 23, and Tiffany Demitro, 24. Authorities charged them with reckless endangerment and acting in a manner injurious to a child less than 17. They were in custody and unavailable for comment Wednesday, the AP reported.

The dramatic events unfolded on 3rd Avenue and 92nd Street in Bay Ridge at about 10:30 a.m.

"I am very proud and… not surprised because she spends a great deal of her life around children and she's always been that protective," Torre said of his daughter.
