Week 1 we talked about the importance of getting prepared. Week 2 we covered the benefits of logging your miles. Now, it's week 3 as we count down to Good Day Atlanta's Carolyn Ryan getting ready to run the annual Peachtree Road Race on July 4.

It's week 3 of five-week training program and we're going to shake things up a little bit. But, first, let's recap what we've done so far.

Week 1: Getting prepared with the right shoes, right outfit and a plan for success.

Week 2: We took a look at logging miles.

Now, for week 3, we want to add conditioning to the mix.

Though conditioning is often referred to as cross training,  what we mean by "conditioning," or cross training are just elements that you can incorporate into your training program that are going to improve your fitness components

Trainer Mary Elizabeth Hogenmuller, of the Forza di Vita studio in Buckhead, has Carolyn Ryan running on Monday and Wednesday and doing conditioning drills on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The best thing about it: you don't need fancy equipment or an expensive gym membership.

One of the best ways to work on your conditioning and improve your overall endurance is these guys right here -- stairs. It's a good idea to hit up your local track or high school football stadium, and go for it.

Another grueling conditioning exercise is Tabata drills, a form of high-intensity interval training.

We also did a combination of burpees, squat jumps, pushups and then core-strengthening foot work. But, feel free to choose whichever exercises you want.

This type of training will come in handy when you're running.

"You're spiking your heart rate, and you're getting your heart used to being operating at that level."
