Clayton Co. fire captain pulls child from burning building

CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -

A Clayton County fire captain put his own safety in jeopardy and ran into a burning building to rescue a trapped child.

Arianna Singleton, 11, is autistic and was trapped in her family's apartment at Laurel Park on Highway 85 last Friday night.  Clayton County Fire Capt. Terry Page arrived before other firefighters.

"Everybody was frantic. It was like a TV show -- running around crazy. Everybody screaming, busting out windows," Page said.

The crowd panicked because Arianna's screams stopped. Without thinking of his own safety, Capt. Page grabbed his air pack and rushed in.

"The smoke had already banked down to the floor," Page said. "You find a wall and you start going and start searching with your arms, and your feet, legs and just kicking around screaming, but she never answered me."

The veteran firefighter finally found Arianna's unconscious body, but realized he had another problem. While he had looked for the child, Page dropped his radio – his only lifeline to talk to other firefighters.

With every second counting and the fire raging, the captain made a run for it.

"I just wrapped her up and ducked and ran," said Page.

A few minutes later, Arianna starting coughing and Page knew the rescue was a success.

Arianna's mother, Christy Nalbandian, is forever grateful.

"I can't not say thank you enough. He saved my baby and I'm forever in debt for that," she said.

Once firefighters arrived on the scene, they were also able to rescue the family's pregnant dog.
