CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Officials are warning residents and visitors to northeastern Illinois to prepare for extreme heat and storms.

Temperatures are expected to rise this weekend, and the warmer summer weather may also bring thunderstorms, lightning and high winds.

Gary Schenkel is executive director of Chicago's Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

In a statement Friday, he says Chicagoans should stay informed about weather conditions and be aware of where to get relief from the heat.

Residents may call 3-1-1 for the location of the nearest city cooling center.

Schenkel also recommends drinking plenty of water and signing up to receive extreme weather alerts at www.NotifyChicago.org.
