A San Tan Valley boy died in a jet skiing accident while visiting his grandparents in North Carolina.
Family friends Ashley Bracken and Dennis Feldhausen set up a small memorial in front of Ranch Elementary School in San Tan Valley on Sunday.
A student at the school, 9-year-old Hayden Dean, was killed when his jet ski collided with his sister's at Lake Norman in North Carolina Thursday.
"It just breaks my heart that this is happening," said Bracken.
The family was visiting their grandparents.
Hayden and his 15-year-old sister were on one jet ski and his 14-and 10-year-old sisters were on another.
Investigators say the trailing jet ski didn't see the other slow down and ran into the back of it.
"She didn't realize that they had stopped, so it was just a freak accident," said Bracken.
The 15-year-old was hospitalized and Hayden was killed. He turned 9-years-old last week.
"He was really into video games and loved to swim, just happy-go-lucky, amazing little kid," said Bracken.
Bracken and Feldhausen set up a fundraising site online to help the family with hospital bills, travel expenses and funeral costs.
"The parents are absolutely devastated, as well, obviously, and they have the toughest job in all of this. We want to be there as much as possible," said Feldhausen
An email from Hayden's mother is posted on the website, saying in part, "The memorial fund is an answer to our prayers and concerns of how to get Hayden home and properly taken care of. The loss of my precious baby boy is more than I can take right now and I thank you all for everything you have done and the continued support, I love you all."
"I have no idea how much this is going to be, getting him home from North Carolina, but I feel any parent shouldn't have to pay for this," said Bracken.
