Lynda Obst: It's An Organic, Constantly Changing Mess

Lynda Obst: It's An Organic, Constantly Changing Mess

Posted: Updated:

Lynda Obst has produced 16 feature films, including Contact, The Fisher King, and Sleepless in Seattle and This Is My Life.  She is now producing the TV shows "Hot In Cleveland" and "Soul Man."

Now, Obst has written a new book called "Sleepless In Hollywood," in which she talks about the "New Abnormal" -- because Hollywood wasn't normal to begin with.  Obst asks why are studios making fewer movies than ever—and why are they bigger, more expensive, and nearly always sequels or recycled ideas?  Obst explores these topics with Steve Edwards and Maria Sansone on Good Day L.A.

Fun facts about Lynda:

  • She worked as an editor at The New York Times before moving to Los Angeles with her then-husband David Obst. Starting at The Geffen Film Company as a "d-girl", her first major project was developing the scripts that would eventually become Flashdance.
  • She partnered with Debra Hill in 1986. The partnership would go on to produce Adventures in Babysitting, Heartbreak Hotel and The Fisher King, among other projects.
  • She is currently producing the upcoming films Interstellar and Higher Institute of Villainous Education.
  • Rick Rosen, one of the founders of the Endeavor talent agency, is Lynda Obst's younger brother.

Sutter Zachman had his first record deal when he was barely out of his teens. You may have seen the Orange County native was on stage at the Largo and other hot clubs around LA. He then left town...after what he called a few "bouts" with the music business, but now he is back with a new EP called ‘Repeat Offender.'
