NEW YORK (AP) - New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott is urging families to take advantage of the city's summer meals program.

Free breakfast and lunch will be provided to youngsters at more than 1,000 locations throughout the city.

The program runs from June 27 through Aug. 30.

Walcott was joined by Yankees infielder Jayson Nix and elected officials at a news conference Tuesday to announce the program.

Executive director Joel Berg of the New York City Coalition Against Hunger also attended the event at Middle School 131 on the Lower East Side.

He said the program is vital to ensuring that low-income children receive adequate nutrition in the summer months.
