CAPE CANAVERAL AFS, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35 ORLANDO) -

The body of a swimmer who had gone missing off Cape Canaveral has been recovered.

Brevard County Fire-Rescue reports that the search for the 23-year-old man started Tuesday morning and ended several hours later.  Lifeguards began by wading through the waves after a woman started screaming for help. Firefighters and a sheriff's helicopter eventually joined the search.

It wasn't until late afternoon when someone spotted the body floating toward shore not far where the man was last seen thrashing in the water.

"It's pretty crazy.  My heart kind of stopped beating," said Julie Weber, who saw the missing swimmer's body.  "I didn't think on my day off I'd go down to the end of my street and see something like this happen."

A medical examiner will determine the cause of death. The man's name wasn't immediately released.

Lifeguards said strong rip currents on this unguarded stretch of beach were a factor in the man's drowning.

"It looks inviting to get out in the water, but it's definitely dangerous at the same time," said Jeff Scabarozi with the Brevard County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said 12 swimmers had to be rescued on Monday alone.
