LIBURN, Ga. -

Police say a woman running an unlicensed daycare in Lilburn left 10 children in the home alone within reach of dangerous materials.

Authorities were called to the home when a parent heard children inside, but said no adult came to the door. When officers arrived, they found 10 children upstairs, huddled on a bed and crying.

Police say the children ranged in age from 8 months to 10 years old. None of them appeared to be hurt, but the home was dirty and dangerous, authorities said.

"They did find a bathtub about three-fourths full of water. They found, throughout the house, various piles of trash," said Lilburn Police Capt. Thomas Bardugon.

Officers also found cleaning materials in cabinets that had non-functional locks.

Police arrested Melissa Brown, the woman allegedly running the daycare. Brown and another woman, Tusharia McCoy, who police say left her children in the home alone, are charged with cruelty to children.

"They felt leaving a 10-year-old in charge of nine other children -- including infants – was OK. We disagree," said Bardugon.

Neighbor Angie Lopez says when she first learned Brown had a daycare, she thought she would leave her children there if she needed a sitter.

"Now I say good thing I never need them to take care of my kids because they're not responsible," said Lopez.

Authorities said that parents should do research potential daycare businesses before dropping their children off.
