HIGHLAND PARK, Mich. (WJBK) -

Emotions boiled over in Highland Park on Tuesday night after residents discovered what they describe as thousands of first edition African-American history books in a dumpster of a school.

"A mistake was made by the workmen," said Donald Weatherspoon, the school district's emergency manager.

He said throwing the books in the dumpster was a mistake, but getting rid of them is not.

"I'm going to have them resorted, and then we're going to figure out what's the best way to get them in a place where they're going to be secure," Weatherspoon said.

Some residents say the historical books should be treated like the artifacts of Highland Park's now closed public library, there in storage still available to the people of the city.

"Who's going to pay for the cost? There is no money. You heard me say there's a $25 million deficit in this district," Weatherspoon said.

The EM said every proposal will be considered, but bottom line, the district is no longer interested in being responsible for the books.
