TAYLOR, Mich. (WJBK) -

Police say a 15-year-old Taylor boy has been taken into custody. He is accused beating a nine-month-old girl inside an apartment.

Neighbors said the 15-year-old has Down syndrome, and police described the teen as severely mentally handicapped.

"I'm pretty mad," said father Daniel Padilla. "He had no right being in my house, just barging in there, and again, where the hell was his mom at?"

The baby's parents accuse the 15-year-old of breaking into their home while they were at work.

The nine-month-old was home with her siblings. Padilla said his 13-year-old son is a responsible baby-sitter.

No one saw the attack. They only heard the baby's screams.

"From what detectives have told me and they've gathered so far, the boy was covered in blood," Padilla said. "She had a minor skull fracture with a little bleeding, but that she was responsive."

The baby was transported in a police vehicle to Oakwood Heritage Hospital where she remains in critical condition Thursday morning.

The family said their door was locked at the time of the attack, but that the bottom deadbolt has been nearly busted for quite some time. They said a request has been made with the apartment complex to have the door fixed.

The apartment complex had no comment.
