FOX 29 Getting Results: Mucky Mosquito Breeding Park

Fox 29, working to get results for folks in Southwest Philadelphia.

A tight budget makes it tough for the city of Philadelphia to keep all of its many parks and recreation centers looking good.

But you gotta see the Eastwick Regional Park to believe it.

It's so nasty that you half expect the Creature From The Black Lagoon to rise up out of this muck and carry someone away. The park attached to the Eastwick Recreation Center floods after the slightest rain. A big downpour buries the place in goo for weeks on end.

Feel like playing a nice game of checkers or chess out here?

"We would like to see something done about this because this is an accident waiting to happen!..." said neighbor Shirley Brooks.

Shirley Brooks has lived in this neighborhood for 37 years, and says things have never been worse.

"We cannot use this park, Mr. Gordon, because of the flood and the dark mud and the murky-- and all the mosquitos," she explained.

Those mosquitos bring with them the threat of disease, like the potentially deadly West Nile virus. Shirley made a phone call to Fox 29 as a last resort.

"I called the city," says Brooks. "Nothing happens. Called the Health department. Nothing happens. Called 311, nothing happens."

All along this stretch, the flooded park has affected the quality of life. Evita Gomez would normally put her pool out in the backyard for her young daughter to cool off.

"We can't put it out this year, because it's not safe or healthy with the mosquitos," says Gomez. "I can't use my grill no more now, because we're bit up by all the mosquitos- a little scary being out here."

This park is supposed to be an amenity for the neighborhood. Instead, it's an eyesore...a smelly mess...and a major health hazard.

"We're senior citizens and young kids. We're very worried that somebody will get sick and then it'll be too late. Too late," says Brooks. "Too late."
