Eskin: With Phillies 10 Games Out, Time To 'Blow It Up'

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Sunday was another disappointing afternoon for the Phillies in Los Angeles with a 6-1 loss to the Dodgers.

They are 10 games out of first place, and many are wondering if they can get it together.

On "Good Day Philadelphia" Monday morning, we asked FOX 29's Howard Eskin if the Phillies can get it together?

Eskin said you have a pretty good sampling of what a team is by June, and it's not great, by the results.

"Remember, they were a .500 or less team last year, too. So, now they've gone a year-and-a-half where they're not a .500-plus team," the sports anchor said.

His answer to what should happen?

"Blow it up," Eskin said, repeating it several times. "That means you've got to make trades. You don't trade to get better because you're not a playoff team. I mean, it's sad, and I know everybody in town wants them to be a playoff team, and we want that excitement past September. But they're not a playoff team. Their offense is bad. So they've got to blow it up. They've got to make some trades."

People want to complain about a bad call on a steal by the Dodgers and other stuff, but Howard said the Phillies scored one meaningless run in Sunday's game.

"The Phillies are not hitting. Where do you start with that? Ryan Howard," who Eskin went on to mention was 0-for-20 on the road trip.

That came after the first baseman was benched for two games to get a mental break.

"He can't hit a breaking ball. The pitchers now know how to throw Ryan Howard," Eskin added. "Good hitters adjust. … He's not a good hitter right now. He struck out three times yesterday. He's at 92 for the season."

And Eskin said he's not the only one with problems: "This while team just can't hit breaking balls, can't hit off-speed pitches."

Shortstop Jimmy Rollins also got caught trying to steal second base while the team was down 4-0, and it wound up ending the inning because it was on a strikeout, Eskin noted: "Stupid, bad fundamental baseball."

Who should get traded?

"I know it's going to be heartbreak here, but I would trade Chase Utley because you get the most for him of any player," Eskin said." You can't stay old. The problem that teams have is you fall in love with the person."

When Good Day's Sheinelle Jones and Dawn Timmeney challenged that idea by saying we're loyal fans and he's one of our best players, Eskin answered, "OK, let's say he's here next year. They're still not a playoff team!"

"You've got a guy in the minor leagues who's having a great year. Let's move forward," he added.

He went on to note that the Yankees signed Derek Jeter, who Eskin said is a Hall-of-Famer while Utley is not, and the whole team got old.

He got more pushback from the anchors.

"It's just hard because, I mean, Howard and Rollins and Chase – how many babies are named Chase right now?" Jones asked.

"Philadelphia has adopted these guys," added Timmeney.

But Eskin continued to argue that the Phillies need to get younger, need to turn the page, and a common problem faced in sports is when to get rid of a player – one year too soon or one year too late.

"Hey, Chase Utley is their best player right now, but you've to start moving for – doesn't make them a playoff team," Eskin said.
