Vet admits to mistakenly euthanizing 4 dogs

Posted: Updated:

FOX 5 has learned that more dogs were mistakenly euthanized by a veterinarian.

As reported last week, Cheryl Bohannon's said her two dogs, Fendi and Coco, escaped from her yard and were picked up by Douglas County animal control. They were later sent to veterinarian Dr. Julie Lugar for an examination, where they were put to death by mistake.

Two other dogs were also euthanized by Lugar, FOX 5 has learned.

Lugar, who was out of town when contacted FOX 5, confirmed via telephone that she didn't read the paperwork and had put all four dogs down.

"I can't tell you why it happened," Lugar said. "I can't tell you why I did what I did. I did make a mistake. It was a horrible, horrible mistake that I cannot change."

Lugar said that she has changed procedures since the dogs were euthanized. She said that at least two people will review the paperwork before a dog is put down.

"I wish I could change things and I can't. I ask forgiveness for a mistake," said Lugar.

Bohannon said that Lugar had called and apologized for the mistake.

"She called and gave me her sincere apologies and I admire her for owning up to it but still, she needs to be held responsible for what she's done," said Bohannon.

Bohannon said that she would like to see put in place at the county level to prevent mistakes like these in the future.
