Roach Infestation In South Philly Neighborhood

Roach Infestation In South Philly Neighborhood

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

A nightly sight that makes Cecelia Horning cringe.

"IT'S HORRIBLE..HORRIBLE!" she says.

The alley behind her South Philly home turns into a roach motel.

The problem is so bad she says, that some have even made themselves comfortable in her bedroom.

"When I'm sleeping, I found a couple under my bed," she recalls.

This nightmare, on 2100 South Mole Street isn't just affecting Horning.

"These roaches look at you when you spray them like ‘is that all you got?'" says Dennis Marcucci.

Dennis mMarcucci says the problems forced him to become an exterminator. He has a can of roach spray...never far from his side since the problem started this summer.

"I have to sit there with can of RAID because I see them coming under the door jam," he tells FOX 29.

Marcucci and Horner blame the infestation on Anthony Nardone. Nardone inherited these two empty homes, but lives in New Jersey. Neighbors say he leaves food out for cats. And the overgrown weeds behind his vacant home only facilitate the problem.

"I was spraying them and I heard in weeds…pss…pss…pss…there were tons in weeds! It was really bad...provides shelter… it's like a breeding ground," remembers Nardone.

L&I confirms they received a complaint two weeks ago about the overgrown weeds that the city's also been out to exterminate.

Late tonight Nardone returned our calls but declined to be interviewed.

He says this is not his fault and everyone in the neighborhood is suffering from the same problem.

Neighbors hope the city can force Nardone to do more. They're just tired of fighting this nightmare on Mole Street that they believe is the result of roaches breeding in their neighbor's vacant house.

"He doesn't care he doesn't live here. People shouldn't be like that" says horning.

Nardone says he's stopped feeding the cats and continues to spray and exterminate weekly when he tends to his business around the corner.
