Detroit apartment residents trapped with no power, AC, or water

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (myFOXDetroit.com) -

Residents of Twin Towers on Orleans and The Lafayette Towers on Lafayette are trapped Wednesday night inside their apartments with no power or water.

The elevators are out, causing many to bite the bullet and climb down twenty-plus flights of stairs to get out.

"I just climbed down 27 stories," resident Steve Swasey tells Fox 2's Taryn Asher.

Swasey had to get to his wife because his 2-month old baby girl needed to eat, and climbing down 27 flights of stairs with baby-in-hand was the only way down. They decided to leave the apartment building for the night. Swazy isn't complaining though.  "As long as I've been here for 14 years I haven't had any issues. So, people can complain, but I think that our percentage of success is very well here."

But some weren't as lucky, rattled by the outage and stuck in their high rise apartments. Detroit firefighters and EMS arrived after getting a call that an elderly man was stuck in the stairwell trying to get down. They walked up 23 flights to get him to safety.

"This should be a high priority. So, hopefully they get it restored soon because it's going to get dark soon," says Chief Randy Gibson of the Detroit Fire Department.

Neither apartment building has emergency lighting or back up generators.

Emergency crews were also called to Twin Towers to rescue some residents trapped in an elevator. There were also some complaints from senior citizens, some with respiratory issues like Spencer Young's mom who wasn't able to climb down 21 flights of stairs.

Young tells Asher, "She's captive in her apartment because the elevators aren't working. I don't understand why a building of this magnitude doesn't have a back-up generator. There's no AC in there, there's no running water in there, because I guess everything is on the electric filtration system, where everything is electric. So therefore, there's nothing we can do."
