Mortgage help for unemployed, underemployed homeowners

Mortgage help for unemployed, underemployed homeowners

Posted: Updated:

Georgia has been one of the hardest hit states in both foreclosures and unemployment. But, a federal program aimed at helping the unemployed – and, even the underemployed – homeowners my help to reverse the trend.

Will and Tiny Harris were the picture of stability. Married for nearly 35 years, they've raised three children in this home they built from the ground up. Will was also a longtime employee at a local company.

"… For 28 years, nice, steady income coming in," Will said.

But in 2009, that nice, steady income went away.

"I just kind of thought things would work out. I didn't know it would get as bad as it got," he said.

Will took the time to go back to school and get training in his passion, computer support.

"I was thinking you do the two years, you get a job, but it was tough," Will said.

The mortgage became overwhelming, but it was a federal program that brought stability back to Will's household. It's called HomeSafe Georgia.

Scott Screden, of CredAbility, said, "HomeSafe Georgia is a federal program to help unemployed people avoid foreclosure and stay in their home. People can qualify for up to 18 months of assistance from the state, but they have to be unemployed or underemployed."
