Lightning strikes cause problems in north Fulton County

Posted: Updated:
FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -

While it's said that lightning never strikes the same place twice, north Fulton County resident Lynette Maton says it can come pretty close.

"It's just been a series of storms, one after the other," Maton said.

One after another, the Milton resident's trees keep getting hit. Maton said that the lightning storm that rumbled through Wednesday was especially violent.

But after no trees fell and the power stayed, Maton went to the kitchen, assuming there were no problems.

"I was washing some dishes and my water went off," she said.

Lynette and her husband went outside and found thousands of pieces of shredded bark.

"I looked up at the trees and you could see that lightning had hit four trees in our front yard and had traveled underground and hit our irrigation system. And that's what caused the loss of  pressure," she said.

But it's the kind of thing that only happens once, right? Wrong.

Last week, lightning hit two trees in the couple's backyard. And again, it traveled underground, shooting a current so strong that it blew out their pool chlorinator and the transmitter that powered their electric dog fence.

"The whole electric fence transmitter melted off the wall, so we were very fortunate," Maton said.

They were fortunate that the barn where surge protector was plugged into the wall didn't catch fire.

Repairs will be expensive, and all the trees will have to come down, but it could've been much worse. And it's not like this could happen a third time...
