Construction Collapse At Temple University

Construction Collapse At Temple University

PHILADELPHIA -

The building's been under construction on the campus of Temple University for more than a year. It was shut down today.

"We just heard screams," recalled worker Rob Monahan. "We thought something went wrong somewhere."

Steel beams underneath the fifth floor had just collapsed, trapping five workers under the debris. One worker was injured and rushed to Hahnaman hospital. He's talking and listed in stable condition.

"We had workers that were trapped above the collapse. We got about 5 workers out," describes Philadelphia Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayres.

The mid-afternoon partial collapse was of Temple University's new, 175 million dollar science research center. The building has been under construction for the past year. University officials believe they know the cause.

"The indications is that a connector on the 5th floor failed. And that caused the beam to fall," says Ray Betzner.

Some students studying at school for the summer session were walking underneath the building when they heard the screams.

"As I was walking…I heard a couple kids go, ‘oh my god.' Oh no, the building collapsed," says Temple student Maria Macri.

"I heard a crash and looked up and everything had collapsed. There was a guy immediately telling us to move aside move aside," recalled Veronica Hudaeck, another student.

Engineers with the state and inspectors with OSHA are on scene trying to officially figure out a cause. It may be months before an official cause is determined.

Right now there's no indication the rest of the building is unsafe. But the site is shut down until further notice.
