Floating pool planned for East River

Floating pool planned for East River

Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - An ambitious project to build a floating pool in the East River has raised more than a quarter of a million dollars in funding.

The project, called + POOL, claims to be the largest civic project in the world funded through the crowded-sourced fundraising site Kickstarter.

More than 3,000 people have pledged $273,000 for the + POOL.

The money will be used to finish testing the concept. To actually built the pool will cost at estimated $15 million more. The planners have said they hope additional crowd-funding will cover much of that price tag.

The + POOL is described as a giant strainer dropped into the river to allow people to enjoy a swim in clean, filtered river water.

The backers claim the pool is designed to filter river water as it floats in through its walls. It would use a layered filtration system to remove bacteria and contaminants.

It claims the pool will clear up to a half-million gallons of river water a day.  It would be anchored to the river bed and have a walkway to shore.

The pool would be designed in the shape of a plus sign with each arm serving a different use. One would be for sports, another for kids, a third for laps, and the final for lounging.

Several local politicians and CEOs have signed on as advisers to the project.

Some might question the reality of concept. An illustrations on the site shows a large whale being able to swim under the floating pool. And there is also the question of permits and approvals. The backers admit that permitting in New York is never guaranteed but they say they are designing plans to meet requirements.

If all goes as planned, the organizers hope to have a pool open as early as 2016.
